The At-Tuwani Mural Project - Laura Rosner & Basil Adraa, Palestine

The At-Tuwani Mural Project is an initiative started by Palestinian activist Basil Adraa and Jewish-American artist-activist Laura Rosner. With members from their partner organisations At-Tuwani Women’s Handicraft Collective and the Center for Jewish Nonviolence they will be creating several murals in the village of At-Tuwani. The project aims to partially transform the landscape of At-Tuwani through murals that can be seen throughout the village as well as driving through the West Bank. The images of the murals will respond to the state of oppression that Area C Palestinians live under while at the same time depicting their resilience to keep living the lives they have lived for generations.

The first mural will depict the tradition of making taboon bread in Palestine. Bread is both a symbol of life and a dietary necessity among communities throughout the world. The mural also represents the foundational role of women in Palestinian society and their strength in the face of struggle. The mural will include a quote by Palestinian-Lebanese poet May Ziade: “Powerful is the one whose motto in life is: I might suffer but will never surrender.”
